There are many ways you can reduce your electric bill. The
following is a list of energy saving tips that will save you
money if you apply them:
- Select efficient appliances using the yellow "Energy
Guide" labels.
- Keep coils clean.
- Try to keep the refrigerator and freezer full.
- Use clothes lines and drying racks as much as possible.
- Run the clothes dryer only with a full load.
- Don't run the dryer longer than necessary.
- Use the cool-down cycle to save energy and reduce wrinkles.
- Turn down the temperature on your hot water heater when
you are gone for several days and consider adding a water
heater jacket.
- Turn appliances off when not in use.
- Use your microwave or crock pot as often as you can.
Both use less energy than your oven.
- Consider an automatic thermostat if no one is home during
the days or try setting your thermostat at 78 degrees in
summer and 68 degrees in winter.
- Put a water saving head on your shower.
- Fix dripping faucets immediately.
- Use cold water for the final rinse on your clothes washer.
- Use only the amount of water needed for the load of clothes
you are washing.
- Run your dishwasher only when you have a full load.
- Allow dishes to air dry, rather than let the dishwasher
use electric heat.
- Change heating and cooling filters monthly.
- Keep baseboard heaters clean.
- Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
- Consider replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent
lamps.
- Use ceiling fans - both in summer and winter. During winter,
reverse the fan switch to help warm air circulate.
- When not in use, keep your fireplace damper closed.
- Caulk and weather-strip around all windows, exterior doors,
baseboards and fireplaces.
