Cotton Electric Cooperative Rebate Program

Cotton Electric Cooperative offers a rebate program to its members for the purchase and installation of energy efficient water heaters and heat pumps. The goal of the program is to encourage members to select more efficient units which lower their monthly heating and cooling bills as well as the cooperative’s overall system demand.

“We are becoming more aware about environmental issues and conservation and how Cotton Electric members can make a difference,” said Warren Langford, CEO. “We hope that our rebate program will encourage our members to select more energy efficient units which will help the environment and save them money on their electric bills. The rebates will help offset the higher purchase price for these units.”

Rebates will be available for high-efficiency air- or ground-source heat pumps based upon the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating. The SEER rating measures the efficiency of the air conditioning unit. Currently, the minimum SEER rating requirement by the Department of Energy for new units sold in the United States is 13 SEER but to qualify for the rebate program, units will need to have a minimum 14 SEER rating. Also, units will need to be ARI (Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute) certified. Members can visit the ARI website at www.aridirectory.org to see if a unit is ARI certified.

Units that have a 14 to 16 SEER rating will receive $150 per ton for new construction or gas conversion or $50 per ton for electric replacement. All ground source units or air source units with a SEER rating over 16 will receive $250 per ton for new construction or gas conversion or $150 per ton for electric replacement. There is a maximum rebate of $1,000 per residence every five years.

Members installing new or replacement electric water heaters will need to select a 40 gallon or greater unit with a minimum energy factor of 0.93. The energy factor measures the energy efficiency of a storage water heater. The most efficient electric storage water heaters have energy factors ranging between 0.93 and 0.95.

Members will receive a $200 rebate for new construction or gas conversion and $50 for an electric replacement. There is a maximum of one rebate per unit every five years.

Rebates will be available for units purchased and installed after May 1, 2007. A proof of purchase and inspection by Cotton Electric personnel is required to receive the rebate.
